PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is tearing up the charts on Twitch today, placing at no. 1 with over 145,000 viewers across just 20 different streamers. This may be the first time you’re hearing about Battlegrounds.
The game just released on Steam Early Access and was created by the same modder who made Arma 3‘s “Battle Royale” and consulted on the super-popular H1Z1: King of the Kill. That modder, Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Green, is finally working on his own standalone game alongside developer Bluehole — Battlegrounds.
Battlegrounds, just like PlayerUnkown’s other projects, is a battle royale-style game where players enter an environment, gather weapons, armor and other items and fight to the death — think of it like a competitive survival shooter game. H1Z1: King of the Kill is the most popular game in this genre — it even has a professional scene where players compete in tournaments for hundreds of thousands of dollars — but Battlegrounds may already be on its way to usurping H1Z1‘s throne.
Although some people in the H1Z1:KotK community aren’t receptive to Battlegrounds yet, many are excited about it considering it’s a very similar game with some improved graphics and physics. The game’s most popular streamers (and one of the most popular streamers in the world) Lirik is certainly holding some sway, who has been streaming the game to nearly 40,000 consistent viewers today.
